Why to embrace Firefox 3.6’s new-tab ethos

Why to embrace Firefox 3.6’s new-tab ethos

Sometimes it’s the little things that count.

The most prominent feature of Firefox 3.6 is Personas, which let you reskin the browser with thousands of different looks. But my single favorite change is a subtler change to the open-source browser’s user interface.

Specifically, when you open a link in a new tab, it appears immediately to the right of the active tab. Before, the new tabs would appear to the far right of the strip of tabs.

Yup, that’s it. For those of us who spend hours a day in a browser, though, the new tab behavior helps group related tasks together. I constantly shuffle among dozens of tabs, and the new approach automatically brings some organization to my cluttered life.

However, I know it’s not everybody’s favorite browser behavior. So along with explaining why I like it, I’ll also take some potshots and share instructions on how to get the old way back.

Why it’s better
The more things I do with a browser–and the number has increased steadily for years now–the more important it becomes to be able to find different tasks amid the chaos. Microsoft and Apple understand this, as evidenced by the new taskbar features in Windows 7 and dock expose in Mac OS X 10.6, aka Snow Leopard. Those features make it easier to pluck out the one window you need from among the many you may have open.

There’s a pattern to how I spawn the dozens of tabs I use as a day progresses. On a variety of pages–Gmail, Google Reader, Yahoo Finance, somebody’s blog post–I’ll encounter a host of links to other pages. I’ll middle-click my mouse button to open interesting pages as background tabs, then use Ctrl-Tab to switch to the new pages when I’m ready. I repeat this pattern many times a day.

With the old behavior, each tab appeared to the far right of the tab strip. That’s fine when getting started, but when I’ve moved halfway across the list and want to open another batch, I want the new ones–call them children–to open next to their parent tab. When I go away and come back, or when I lose place juggling tasks, it’s easier to find my bearings again.

It’s like being in a library. When you’re in the European history section, you don’t want to find books on rewiring your house and on vegetarian cooking.

As a longtime Firefox user, I didn’t realize tab positioning could be better. When I started using Google’s Chrome, which introduced the new tab behavior to me, the scales were lifted from my eyes. I immediately could get to the next tab with a quick press of Ctrl-Tab on the keyboard rather than have to use the mouse to click over to the far end of the list. I use both browsers daily, but until the Firefox 3.6 beta arrived, the new-tab position had become a sore point for me when in Firefox.

The change is actually a big deal in a couple ways. First, even seemingly minor changes in software can be disruptive. Old habits die hard, and computer users wrestling with constant change can get angry when more is foisted upon them.

Second, though, browsers are assuming an ever greater role in what people do in their personal and professional lives, and keeping one’s bearings is commensurately important. That’s especially true for those people for whom a gaggle of browser tabs represents a collection of chores going on in parallel.

How the competition handles it
Tabs are now universal among browsers, but new-tab behavior isn’t. Firefox and Chrome handle it the way I like best, but how do others tackle the issue?

First, let’s look at Internet Explorer 8. Microsoft showed it understands some of the challenges of tab management in its latest version of its browser by coloring child tabs the same hue as their parents, but I have a gripe with how it works. Specifically, although child tabs get the same color as their parents for easy grouping and arrive to the right, grandchild tabs are the same color as child tabs. Similarly, grandchild tabs appear to the far right of the whole group of child tabs.

In my mind, I consider grandchild tabs a separate group from the child tabs. But with IE, grandchildren get the same color and position treatment as children. The only way to get a new color is to start a fresh empty tab There’s no easy way to give grandchildren a new color without causing some confusion, though–should the child be the same color as the original parent or change color to be grouped with the grandchildren?

Next is Opera, which gives users a choice. By default, it opens new tabs to the far right, which I don’t like, but in the Advanced|Tabs section of the preferences dialog box, you can check “Open new tab next to active.” Huzzah!

There’s a subtle change here I don’t care for, though. Tabs always appear immediately to the right of the active tab. I’d rather have all one tab’s children appear in sequence to the right. For example, if a parent tab is in position 1, then the first child would be in position 2, the second in position 3, and the third in position 4. Opening three child tabs in Opera leaves the parent in position 1, the third child in position 2, the second child in position 3, and the first child in position 4.

Last, there’s Safari. It does it the old way I loathe with no option to change. Too bad.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans – Movie Review

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans – Movie Review

Neither a sequel to Bad Lieutenant nor a remake of it, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is, in fact, an entirely different animal than Abel Ferrara’s 1992 indie hit. And oh, what a strange, fascinating, ferocious animal it is. Take a film noir version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, run in through a kitchen garbage disposal, and you’ll get a sense of what this surreal comic masterpiece holds in store.

Directed by Werner Herzog, that German mad scientist whose varied oeuvre includes the underrated 2006 drama Rescue Dawn and the heartbreaking 2005 doc Grizzly Man, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, takes its predecessor’s premise of a corrupt, decadent cop operating on both sides of the law and uses it as a gateway to a frenzied world of unmitigated depravity.

Our chauffeur on this manic joyride through Hades is Nicolas Cage, showing utter contempt for subtlety in the title role of New Orleans detective Terence McDonagh. After suffering a painful back injury during the Katrina disaster, McDonagh graduated from prescription opiates to their illegal counterparts within months, and is a fully-functioning drug addict by the time we meet him. Twitchy, sweaty, occasionally delusional and prone to angry outbursts, he’s still the best damn cop in the entire Orleans parish — albeit one who steals items from the prop room, tortures elderly invalids for information, fixes college football games and shakes down perps for crack.

It’s a difficult enterprise, juggling a full-time police job, an all-consuming drug addiction and a temperamental hooker girlfriend (Eva Mendes), and the stresses of such delirious multi-tasking begin to wear on McDonagh. But even as his descent into madness gathers momentum (evidenced by nagging visions of imaginary iguanas), his determination to deliver justice the beleaguered citizens of New Orleans remains unfettered.

Any doubts that Bad Lieutenant: New Orleans is meant to be taken as a comedy will disappear during its climax, which features perhaps the most hilariously collection of rapid-fire deus ex machina moments in cinematic history. It’s the perfect capstone to this endlessly bizarre, wildly entertaining film.

Is 3 Idiots Movie Based On 5 Point Someone Novel

Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Madhavan and Boman Irani has gone on the floors. The film is loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone. The first teaser poster of the film is out and has a huge blackboard with mathematical formulae scribbled on it.

Work in progress

Sources reveal that Hirani doesn’t want to give away the look of his protagonists soon, which is why the teaser doesn’t have any of the actors in it. However, work on the film is underway and Hirani plans to wrap 3 Idiots by December.

Begins September

The source adds, “The shoot of the film with the supporting characters has already begun, Hirani and his team are in Simla and the film is scheduled to be shot in Ladakh, Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai as well. Aamir and rest of the cast will begin shooting in early September.”

Shantanu Moitra has given the music for 3 Idiots while the lyrics are by Swanand Kirkire.

Class is on

Apparently, author Chetan Bhagat was the first to see the poster and quite liked the final result. “Since the setting is that of an engineering college campus the poster had to have elements of a classroom.”

The poster has been designed by Rahul Nanda.

Kurbaan a brilliantly designed terror plot

Kurbaan a brilliantly designed terror plot

Film: ‘Kurbaan’; Cast: Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Om Puri, Kirron Kher; Director: Rensil d’Silva; Rating: ****

‘When a bomb explodes, mainly the innocent die,’ says Vivek Oberoi towards the finale when, to put it at the most basic level, all hell breaks loose.

In ‘Rang De Basanti’, Rensil d’Silva had taken screenwriting in Hindi cinema to a new level of expressionism. With his directorial debut ‘Kurbaan’, Rensil carries the spoken, unspoken, visual and metaphorical language of mainstream cinema to an unvisited shore.

Blending the thorny theme of the political-cultural identity of the Muslim community post 26/11 with the commercial identity of contemporary Hindi cinema is not an easy task. The film manages to be superior to other films on global terrorism, a theme that now threatens to turn into a full-blown commercial formula.

In ‘Kurbaan’, the characters are not representational of Islamic ideology. They function in the brilliantly-designed plot as people who subscribe to the view that the Muslim community across the world is the victim of American oil-politics that threatens to annihilate the Islamic world.

This is very thin ice for a debutant director to walk on. Rensil’s film says that a sense of aggressive isolation grips the Muslim community. There are either those (like the characters played by Saif, Om Puri and Kirron Kher) who think a direct action plan of retaliation is required to save Muslims from mass destruction. Or, more alarmingly, there are those like the characters of Vivek Oberoi and his father (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) who are tacitly in favour of violence against their community’s collective persecution.

Either way, Rensil’s film looks at the theme of Islamic terrorism with fearless and brutal honestly.

After a rather pale courtship in Delhi, Hindu lecturer Avantika (Kareena) flies into New York with her ever-so-suave suitor Ehsaan (Saif).

The narrative immediately plunges Avantika into the vortex of a 26/11-styled conspiracy being hatched in her backyard on a deceptively quiet suburban street filled with Asian homes.

If the closet terrorists in the narrative are master plotters, director Rensil is no less. While the master-plotters in ‘Kurbaan’ finally fail, Rensil walks past the finishing line with victorious strides. With cinematographer Hemant Chaturvedi, Rensil moves stealthily in and out of politically-challenged lives with the least amount of drama and ostentation.

The background score is kept at a bare minimum. ‘Kurbaan’ creates its drama from the characters’ misbegotten sense of identity. From that vantage point of disorientation, the film dexterously moves into the mode of action-driven conflicts.

‘Kurbaan’ turns out to be one relentlessly breathless treatise on how to create a prolonged climax without losing the theme’s bearings. The film has been shot as an extended crime thriller.

There is room in the commodious narration for disgruntled characters from a multitude of Islamic countries living in the US. But at the core, there are just three characters – the terrorist, his pregnant and rebellious wife and the expose-driven journalist, played by Saif, Kareena and Vivek respectively.

Vivek plays the progressive American Muslim with a resolute understanding of the underlying politics that plagues his character’s soul. But Saif is a disappointment. In a role that could have been a career-defining event, the actor pitches a performance as a not-so-reluctant terrorist that simply swims on the surface.

There’s no attempt by the actor to understand the workings of Ehsaan’s mind or to revisit Ehsaan’s roots. What we see is a confused rather than a politically and religiously conflicted soul tormented by an ideological crisis.

Where is the mean-spirited guy who exploited and cheated Urmila Matondkar in ‘Ek Hasina Thi’?

Finally ‘Kurbaan’ belongs to Kareena Kapoor. In her most consistently-pitched performance to date, she pulls out all stops to play a betrayed wife with splendid sensitivity. Kareena accommodates her radiant beauty into an utterly credible character and performance.

Much of the credit for Kareena’s compelling performance must go to the written word. Anurag Kashyap and Niranjan Iyenger enter the characters’ dark and anguished world with words that avoid rhetorical excesses. However, a key classroom discussion on Islam and the Western world is ruined because even the American students speak in Hindi!

‘Kurbaan’ shows a deep understanding of the bonds that bind and separate the Islamic world from the West. It is a critically important work because it spells out uncomfortable truths in a cinematic language that’s riveting and resonant without resorting to extravagant flourishes and fireworks.

Not to be missed.

India to be the 3rd Largest Economy after China and USA by 2050

New Delhi: According to a US based internationally recognized foreign policy think tank, India will be the third largest economy after China and USA by 2050. An article titled, “The G-20 in 2050″ by Uri Dadush and Bannett Stancil said that China, USA and India will emerge as the world’s three largest economies by 2050.
The experts claim that out of G-20 countries, India is predicted to grow more rapidly. But its current modest size would be an obstacle to be the world’s largest economy. The G-20’s GDP is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 3.6 percent.

India’s average annual GDP growth rate is predicted to be 6.19 % during the period of 2009-2050. Germany, The UK, France and Italy will be in fourth to seventh spots respectively in the world economy, the report said.

6 killed, 30 injured, as Maoists derail Train in Jharkhand

Ranchi: The Naxals blew up a railway track in Jharkhand, killing at least 6 people and injuring nearly 30. The incident occurred late last night between Manoharpur and Pasaita station in Chaibasa district. At least eight bogies of the Tata Nagar-Bilaspur passenger train, were derailed, as the Maoists triggered the blast.
This is the first time the Naxals have derailed a train by landmine blast. Their desperation goes against their so-called “principles” that they don’t cause harm to common people. Since the incident occurred near Chakradharpur on Jharkhand-Odisha border, the injured have been shifted to the Ispat General Hospital in Rourkela.

Rescue and relief operation are going on full swing. The authorities are trying to clear the tracks so that train service is resumed on this route. The Railway Ministry has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the dead, Rs 1 lakh for critically injured and Rs 10,000 for injured.

Kangana Ranaut slams Media for linking her to David Headley – Bollywood News

Kangana Ranaut slams Media for linking her to David Headley – Bollywood News

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has slammed the media for linking her to LeT operative and US citizen David Coleman Headley. Earlier, a section of media reported that Mahesh Bhatt’s son Rahul Bhatt had introduced Headley to 15 Bollywood personalities, including Kangana Ranaut and Aarti Chhabria.
While the National Investigative Agency (NIA) is silent on the probe findings, the media is abuzz with rumors and speculations and has tarnished the image of some of the filmstars. They included Kangana, Aarti, Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan.

Even it is believed that Rahul Bhatt was unaware of Headley’s terror plans and was the first person to share the info with the police, when he came to know about Headley’s real objectives.

Kangana is very upset about the latest developments and has come up with a detailed explanation on her blog. She even threatened to take legal action against a TV channel, which started all these.

“I am putting on record here on my official site, that I have never had any contact whatsoever with this person Hadley, and have absolutely no idea who he is. In fact, I have never had the opportunity to meet Rahul Bhatt in my life, so meeting anyone through him is out of the question”, wrote Kangana.

Aarti Chhabria has already lodged a police complaint with the Mumbai Police, urging them to investigate these baseless rumours.

Post 9/11, there’s anger, distrust, suspicion, uneasiness all around. Not a day passes when you don’t hear of terrorists killing civilians in the name of religion.

Many storytellers have, in the past, narrated stories about terrorists and their nefarious and despicable plans. But let me state one thing categorically. You haven’t watched a more profound, a more thought-provoking, a more dramatic story on this subject before KURBAAN. It’s not just the most powerful film to come out of Dharma Productions, it’s the most powerful film to come out of the Hindi film industry this year, thus far.

KURBAAN tries to penetrate into the psyche of not just the terrorist, but also someone who has been a helpless spectator all this while. This film is sure to spark off discussions and debates, although it must also be noted that it doesn’t take sides or gets preachy.

Avantika [Kareena Kapoor] is a teacher at a university in Delhi. She has come back from New York where she teaches, because her father [Aakash Khurana] has suffered a heart attack. During this period, she meets a Professor called Ehsaan Khan [Saif Ali Khan]. Soon, they begin seeing each other and love blossoms.

A few months later, Avantika receives a call from her university in New York, asking her to come back. Avantika breaks the news to Ehsaan. He, in turn, tells her he doesn’t mind coming to the States with her. But first they need to get married.

Soon after the marriage, they leave to start a new life in New York. They buy a house in an Indian neighbourhood and move in. Just as they are setting up home, their conservative Muslim neighbours invite them over for dinner. The next morning, Salma [Nauheed Cyrusi], one of the women Avantika met the night before at the dinner, visits her under the pretext of gifting her sweets.

When Avantika invites her in, Salma tells her that she is in grave danger. Nothing is what it seems. Salma pleads with Avantika to help her. What follows next is a series of incidents that sucks Avantika into a vortex of danger and intrigue. As her life spirals out of control, Avantika realizes that she is a pawn in a huge game.

KURBAAN has two stories running concurrently – the love story between Saif and Kareena and the story of Islamic terrorists. Rensil sets the stage in the initial 15 minutes itself, after which there’s a twist in the tale every 15-20 minutes, which catches you completely unaware. Rensil doesn’t borrow from the past, which makes the proceedings thoroughly captivating.

The highpoint is the 35-minute climax, which leaves you spellbound. The culmination to the story shakes you completely, largely because it’s pragmatic and has been executed most logically as well. In fact, filming the climax at the various underground tube stations must’ve been the toughest challenge for the director.

On the flip side, KURBAAN caters more to the intelligentsia or the thinking viewer and might not be lapped up whole-heartedly by those who survive on the staple diet of hardcore masala fares.

Some of the finest technicians in the business are associated with KURBAAN. Hemant Chaturvedi’s cinematography is super. The film bears an international look all through. Salim-Sulaiman’s music is well integrated in the narrative. At least two tracks merit a mention – ‘Shukran Allah’ and ‘Ali Maula’. Anurag Kashyap and Niranjan Iyengar’s dialogue are superb. The lines enhance the impact of several sequences. Thrills are, again, in sync with the mood of the film.

KURBAAN is embellished with superlative performances. Saif is extra-ordinary in a role that only proves his versatility once again. If he won your heart with a winning performance in LOVE AAJ KAL a few months ago, you need to watch this supremely talented actor underplay his part so beautifully in KURBAAN. As for Kareena, KURBAAN reiterates one fact yet again: She’s the best in the business. No two opinions on that! Watch her get those emotional sequences right, it’s incredible. Here’s a performance that truly merits the highest praise and admiration, besides fetching her awards and accolades.

Vivek Oberoi is fantastic. Matching Saif and Kareena at every step, KURBAAN should be the turning point in Vivek’s career. It’s a difficult role to portray and only an actor with a wide range could’ve portrayed this part so effectively. Om Puri is top notch and so is Kirron Kher. Kirron is marvellous, especially in the penultimate scene. Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi and Kulbhushan Kharbanda lend credibility to their brief roles.

On the whole, KURBAAN is the most powerful film to come out of the Hindi film industry in 2009, so far. The film has a captivating plot, gripping screenplay, super performances and a climax that shakes you up completely. Watching this movie should be on top of your agenda this week
